Buffalo Bones Camp

Become and archaeologist for a day!  Campers will learn about archaeology and Alberta’s history, and get hands-on instruction from an archaeologist on archaeological methods and practices while working on a mock dig (and observing a real excavation). The students will see firsthand that archaeology is about much more than just "digging" for artifacts. Participants will record information from the mock site the same way that an archaeologist would at a real site. They will learn that archaeology involves detailed and accurate record keeping so that information is not destroyed or lost forever.  Campers will take careful measurements and make in situ drawings of the items they uncovered. As part of the excavation process, participants will learn how to screen the soil removed from the excavation to locate smaller pieces or broken artifacts.  Other activities include some classroom instruction and a visit to an archaeology lab, where campers will learn to identify the main artifact types found at the Bodo Site. Upon completion of the camp, each camper will receive a stone arrowhead and a certificate.
