Archaeology Programs for all Ages!

Experience archaeology in action at the Bodo Site! This site was inhabited during the past 5000 years by Aboriginal people who both hunted and camped in this unique area of sand dunes.  

Programs available at the Bodo Archaeological Site include:

Daily Drop In Tours:

Drop in at the Bodo Archaeological Centre and Site daily and see newly discovered finds including bone fragments, arrowheads, pottery shards and stone and bone tools some dating back thousands of years. The full adventure includes a tour of the interpertive center and the excavation site with an archaeologist, hands on activites for the kids, and if time permits, a visit to the Bodo Sand Dunes.

Age: All ages are welcome
Duration:  Tours are approximately 2 hours long  
Tours are offered: Monday - Friday 9 am – 5 pm and 
Saturday - Sunday 10 am - 2 pm
Cost: Adult ($20); younger than 12 years ($10); under 5 years (Free)

 

Adult Dig It Camps:

Be an archaeologist! Discover the excitement of digging at the Bodo Archaeological Site and learn from a professional archaeologist the basic skills of excavation and artifact identification. The excavation will take place at the Bodo Bison Skulls Site, where a 500 year old communal bison kill site has been uncovered. This camp focuses on fieldwork, but no previous excavation experience is required.  Participants will make a contribution to the understanding of precontact history in Alberta and on the greater Northern Plains. Registration in the 4-day camp includes a bonus field trip.

Age: 16 years and older
Duration:  2 or 4 day camps available; daily 9 am – 4 pm.

Cost: $125.00 per day / person (includes lunch and snacks)
You need: to provide breakfast and supper and accommodations. Tipis are available for rent by request. Serviced campsites available at Bodo. Wolf Willow B&B is located nearby.

Kids Day Camps:

Become an archaeologist for a day! Discover archaeology and history through fun, interactive, hands-on, landscape based activities designed for all ages.  

Activities include a visit to an archaeology lab and a 500 year-old archaeological excavation site, a buffalo rubbing stone, traditional skills projects, hiking in the sandhills, and a mock excavation.  During the course of the day campers will develop a basic understanding of archaeology through experiential hands-on activities taught by an archaeologist.  

At the end of the day get your very own stone arrowhead and Junior Archaeologist certificate.

Mighty Warrior Day Camp: Ages 5-8 

Duration: 10 am - 3 pm
2017 Dates Available: July 4, 5, 12, 19, 19 and August 1, 2, 9.
Cost: $35 per child
You need: a bag lunch, water bottle & closed toe shoes; snacks are provided.

 

Arrowhead Day Camp: Ages 9-11

Duration: 10 am - 3 pm
2017 Dates Available: July 6, 13, 20, 27 and August 3, 10
Cost: $35 per child 
You need: a bag lunch, water bottle & closed toe shoes; snacks are provided.

 

Buffalo Bones Day Camp: Ages 12-15 

Duration: 10 am - 4 pm
2017 Dates Available: July 7, 21 and August 4, 11
Cost: $45 per child
You need: a bag lunch, water bottle & closed toe shoes; snacks are provided.

 

Family Lifeways Camps:

Your family can live like it was 200 years ago!  This camp will provide families with the opportunity to observe and experience life the way it was prior to European contact in Alberta. Camp includes presentations and workshops with interactive and hands-on activities for the entire family.  Activities may include traditional skills, such as pottery production, stone tool making, traditional games, atlatl throwing, story telling.  Activities will be tailored to group interest and the ages of participating youth.  Top your experience by spending the night in a tipi.  Be astonished by the quiet tranquility of the Alberta Plains while sleeping in a tipi under the stars. Tipi camping supply list is available upon request.

 
Age: Families of all ages (minimum group size is 4)
Duration: Camp begins at 1 pm on the first day and ends at 4 pm on the second day
Price: $125/person for 2 days or $500.00/family (based on family of four)
Dates Available: May through August (upon request)
You need: This camp includes snacks and meals (supper on the first day, breakfast & lunch on the second day & all snacks).  Accommodations are the participant’s responsibility.

 

Special Programs and Group Tours:

Special Programs, including camps, family renions, teachers conventions, conference facilities and more can be developed to fit your needs.  Meals can be added to most programs.

Traveling with a Group? We would be pleased to develop a tour or day trip that would suit your group!  Large groups are eligible for the special group rates.  Meals can be added to most programs.
